The Wheelhouse

The History
Dating back to the 1840s, The Wheelhouse at Todsmill was originally used to grind corn, then subsequently used to grind flint for the pottery industry including The Bo'ness Pottery. Before grinding, the flintstones had to be calcined (oxidised) in kilns built beside the mill, with all flint imported from Gravesend in Kent. Once ground, the flint powder was added to the clay mixture to prevent deformation during drying and firing.

In recent years, we have lovingly restored The Wheelhouse and its original waterwheel. The wheel itself was removed from the river, taken offsite, and meticulously rebuilt to its former condition. Reconstructed using reclaimed sandstone, this remarkable property now sits proudly on the banks of the River Avon and features a double balcony.

The river is home to trout and wild otters, and if you crave peace and quiet—broken only by the gentle sound of flowing water and local birds—then this is the perfect place to escape and unwind.
